Responsibilities

Roles and Responsibilities

The specific roles and responsibilities of the Gender Coordinator will include:

Lead the design of AKF gender related activities in the Coast Region as directed by project designs and the Gender Equality Strategy (GES).
Assume an active role in supporting integration of gender into education and civil society programme activities and, where required, lead in aspects of these activities explicitly designed to advance gender equity.
Ensure the effective implementation of the GES and associated action plans in the Coast Region and ensure these are compliant and contributing to the national policy frameworks.
Ensure the AKF gender policies are relevant and aligned to the country.
Provide technical support to the Coast Region Team to enable the integration of the GES and actions into all aspects of AKF’s education and civil society programming and project cycles (design, budgeting, recruitment, etc.)
Identify capacity gaps and support needs of the Coast Region Team to inform the design and delivery of a strategic internal capacity development process. Ensure this is aligned and contributing to existing internal gender mainstreaming efforts.

Develop positive and close working relationships with partner civil society organisations (CSO), government (as well as through technical working groups), AKF Regional teams and AKDN education sister agencies.

Provide technical support on the implementation of gender equality capacity development plans with CSO and government as part of their broader institutional capacity development plans.

Scope of work
The Programme has shifted to a demand-driven approach to engage 100 school communities in design thinking processes (roughly 20 design teams in total). HCD coaches are expected to engage directly with their designated design teams remotely and onsite to support school communities design, test and iterate context driven innovations focused on gender barriers to education.
Role of A... Human Centred Design Coach

Participate in F4L HCD sprints (3 Days per sprint) as a coach to help facilitate the design process and build relationships with the teams you will support over a 6-month period.
In particular, support design teams to develop a prototype and create a clear testing plan, including outlining key assumptions to test in their classrooms/youth spaces.
Build rapport with the school communities to create a strong coach-coachee relationship that will facilitate knowledge sharing and enhance their experience in and the outputs of the design process.
Support in evidence and learning generation through the coaching process and from your design teams to inform F4L processes and assess the potential for Minimum Viable Prototypes(MVP).
Support school communities to reflect on the assessment data and reflections from the HCD exploration phase and use the data collected to inform the design process.
Engage and collaborate with other coaches to support learning and incubation of Minimum Viable Prototypes.
Documentation

During the Sprints, document your team(s) HCD experience from their How Might We, Top 3 Ideas, Prototypes and Testing Plan, including assumptions to be tested
Throughout the coaching period, document the coaching journey, including successes, challenges, and learnings faced by your design teams
At the end of the coaching process, deliver a final report on your team(s) testing experience and the desirability and feasibility of their MVP
Deliver a report on Innovations designed, and assumptions tested.



To achieve the above, it is expected for the coach to:

Support the facilitation of HCD sprints to support design teams to embark on their HCD journey.
Facilitate progressive weekly or bi-weekly call or platform-based check-ins, such as WhatsApp or Zoom with your design teams to facilitate the innovation cycle.
Participate in F4L events including the Innovation in Education Showcase Events.
Work collaboratively with design teams, AKF staff and other F4L partners to capture and make meaning of the coaching process and MVPs.
Attend weekly check-in calls with F4L staff, other AKF staff and non-AKF representatives, as necessary.

Duration
The assignment will run from June to December 2023, but the coaches will be engaged on a needs basis as and when sessions occur for the period of the program.
Expected deliverables.

Active participation in Design Thinking Sprints.
Produce a post-sprint, mid-coaching, and end-coaching reports, as detailed above.
Conduct site visits to support school communities to test their prototypes.

The position
AKF is seeking an experienced Regional Gender Advisor to provide technical expertise, leadership and guidance for the Foundations for Education and Empowerment (F4EE) in Africa, a partnership program co-funded by Global Affairs Canada and Aga Khan Foundation. The program has three components: Foundations for Learning (F4L), Advancing Gender Equality through Civil Society (AGECS) and... Advancing Canadian Champions for Development (ACCD). The Regional Gender Advisor will provide active support to F4L and AGECS components as well as strengthen the regional program portfolio, and advance AKF’s gender equality agenda at the institutional level diversity and inclusion goals. This Position will be based in Nairobi.   
Responsibilities 
The Regional Gender Advisor will ensure integration of gender equality in all aspects of F4EE program implementation, monitoring, evaluation, and learning. The Regional Gender Advisor will achieve this through providing technical inputs, technical oversight, and capacity building. The Regional Gender Advisor will support all relevant F4EE project staff and all implementing partners to ensure the program meets or exceeds the intended impact on gender equality and responds to donor and AKF requirements. 
 

The Regional Gender Advisor will provide strategic guidance and technical support to the Country Gender Coordinators and support them in the implementation of gender equality strategies and activities at the country level. 

 

The Regional Gender Advisor will: 

Provide overall direction on gender equality targeted and integrated interventions for the project across F4L and AGECS components and countries.

Contribute to the program implementation plans, taking a lead role on the integration of gender equality in F4L and AGECS.
