Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background, the interns' assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the supervision of the Officer-in-Charge of the Oversight and Internal Controls Unit (MACS), the intern will:
Support in undertaking periodic and ad hoc reviews independently or with relevant managers in HQ, Regional, country and field offices to assess the effectiveness of the internal controls, identify risk areas, assess the potential for fraud and corruption in operational activities and recommend required actions to the relevant units or management level.
Support to monitor and report on the follow-up of the implementation of audit, and other oversight bodies’ recommendations and associated management actions.
Assist in preparing annual performance planning and reviews, risk assessment and updating of risk registers, including operational level risk registers and progress towards implementing the risk mitigation actions.
Prepare periodic progress reports on the status of compliance and internal controls in the office.
Liaise with colleagues in HQ, ROs, and when necessary COs, which are the focal point for risk analysis and monitoring.
Keep up to date on documents/reports/guidelines that have a bearing on matters related to programme budgets, ensuring compliance with intergovernmental recommendations and decisions as well as with United Nations policies and procedures.
Perform other related duties, as assigned.

Education
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent
Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office).
Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Preferred areas of studies:
Business Administration, Finance, Audit, Risk Management, Project Management, or related field of study.
Work Experience
No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
Experience in Risk Management, Internal Controls, or Audit in a large to medium size organization is required.
Experience in using Excel to create trend analysis and word to generate reports is desirable.
Experience in using power-point to make graphical presentations is desirable.
