I was at an interview in a reputable company. I was surprised to see that some candidates for the position had come with their mothers.

Can someone explain - is this some kind of new trend now?

  • it depends but doesn't seem like the worst idea.. there do need to be protections in place perhaps to not make this a requirement.. not an automatic... disqualifier either more

  • was it put as a requirement in the advert

  • Hi, I saw such a case, the candidate should be independent, look at us when we used to search for job our parents were surprised that you actually got... a job and you are reporting. You went for an interview, you passed. This is baby sitting an adult. Funny more

  • Any HR giving such a candidate an opportunity is not professional enough. Give them 2 minutes to me tion their name, and you tell them you can go.

  • Not very sure about this but some young candidates are not comfortable attending interviews due to the huge numbers who come for interviews. The... parents want to ensure that they are encouraged and attend the process to the end. The presence of the parent make them a little bit patient to wait until their turn & also ensures that they conform well with the interview expectations and needs.

  • soo unprofessional, when you finally get the job,are you going to come to the office everyday with your father or siblings?

  • Hehe funny

  • Oh,this is something new to me.

  • Bringing a parent or guardian to an interview is not a common practice, but it has been observed in certain contexts, especially among younger... candidates. Few reasons why this might happen:

Support and Comfort: Some candidates may feel nervous about interviews and bring a parent for emotional support. This can be particularly true for recent graduates or those entering the workforce for the first time.

Cultural Factors: In some cultures, it's customary to involve family in significant decisions, including career choices. Parents may accompany their children to interviews as a sign of support and involvement.

Perception of Guidance: Some candidates might believe that having a parent present can help them navigate the interview process or provide additional insights.

Trends in Youth Behavior: As career paths evolve, some young people may feel more comfortable seeking assistance and guidance from their parents, reflecting changing dynamics in family relationships.

  • Am sure the mother didn't enter the interview room. She waited for her outside

  • It depends on the job, candidate age, and distance from home. Imagine you are from Eldoret which is 7 hrs from Nairobi. Your 22yr old girl has been... called for an interview in a place she has never been before. Would assume all will be fine? It requires critical thinking  more

  • Some parents insist to escort their children for any occasion. But it is unethical

  • First time to hear of this,
What was the reason for the mother to be there,1. Moral support
    2. Had nothing to do and passed by.
Which is actually not... professional at all. Parent I think should hear that I have secured a job with a certain company.

  • This is the first time I have heard about something of this nature.
    This is unethical.
The presence of their parents will influence the outcome of the... interview and as a result, the best candidate may be disqualified.
    This practice should be discouraged

  • Bringing a parent to a job interview is not a common or professional practice. While it may happen due to overprotective parenting, lack of... professional experience, or cultural differences, it's generally frowned upon. Though not a trend, occasional cases reflect increasing parental involvement in young adults' careers. Most employers expect candidates to attend interviews independently.

Even the way this starts "I was at an interview in a reputable... company" just sounds like a lie.  more
